The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Douye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the governor-elect of Bayelsa state.

INEC declares Diri as Bayelsa Governor-elect

Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairman, announced this at the INEC headquarters in Abuja on Friday.

This followed the supreme court judgment which sacked David Lyon of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who was declared winner of the November 2019 governorship election in the state.

”In compliance with the orders of the supreme court, the commission met this morning and reviewed the result of the election in which 45 political parties contested,” the INEC chairman said.

”Without the votes scored by the All Progressives Congress (APC), whose candidates were deemed not to have participated in the election, the total number of lawful and valid votes cast in the election now stand at 146,999. Out of this figure, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scored the highest number of lawful votes with 143,172.

”Similarly, the PDP has scored more than 25% of the lawful votes cast in all the eight (8) local government areas of the state.

”Consequently, Senator Douye Diri and Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo of the PDP are hereby declared winners and returned elected and governor and deputy governor of Bayelsa.

”The commission is aware that the tenure of the incumbent governor of Bayelsa ends at midnight today, Friday, 14th February, 2020. Therefore, in fulfilment of Section 75 of the Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended), the certificates of return to the governor and deputy governor-elect will be presented to them immediately as ordered by the supreme court.”

There have been protests in Bayelsa against the judgment of the supreme court. Some citizens have demanded that it is either Lyon or no governor in the state.

Femi Adesina has said the fact that Nigerians elected a president doesn’t mean they have to order the President around. He said this when he appeared on Nigeria Info FM today May 5.

He made the statement while responding to a caller, Mr Ibikunle, who asked him to ensure President Buhari holds a media chat with men of the Nigerian press.

Responding, Adesina said

I just want to encourage Mr Ibikunle not to continue to sound like a broken record. When the COVID thing started, everyone was like the President should talk to us. He has had three National broadcast within a month. What else do they want? What else do they want? Some people think because you elected a President or you did not elect you, you must lead your President by the nose.

It doesn’t happen. The fact that you have elected a man does not mean then you begin to order him around. The President will do what is good for the country at any given time”he said

The Chinese Government has donated N48 Million to the Presidential Task Force (PTF) to support the fight against the spread of COVID-19.

Chinese Ambassador, Zhou Pingjian, made the donation today April 23, to members of the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19.

Pingjian said the donation is an acknowledgment of the long-standing relationship the Chinese government has with the Nigerian government.

“China will never leave its friends in difficulty, the help China offers does not involve any selfish interest. In spite of the lockdown, China formally supports Nigeria’s fight against the outbreak and stands ready to assist if needed to the best of its ability.

We have full confidence in Nigeria’s determination, capacity, and capability to defeat the virus. We believe Nigeria will continue to treat the Chinese Nationals here as your own” he said

The National Coordinator of the PTF, Dr. Sani Aliyu, thereafter, acknowledged China’s contributions to Nigeria since the pandemic broke in Lagos in February this year.

“We are aware of the huge work you are doing in providing isolation facilities, particularly in Abuja and other parts of the country. You have also contributed immensely to current commodities not only ventilators but also protective equipment that have been distributed across our health institutions. You have provided us with technical assistance in terms of manpower.

“Nigeria is very grateful, the PTF is very grateful and on behalf of the chairman of the PTF, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha, I would like to extend our sincere gratitude to you. We will continue to work together to make sure that this pandemic is brought to a halt as soon as possible” Aliyu said

If Buhari asks his advisers to eat his faeces and call it afang soup they would do so without hesitation – Fani Kayode

Fani Kayode blasts the special adviser to Buhari on social Investment for saying that those who benefit from the conditional cash transfer of the Federal Government as palliative to cushion the effects of the lockdown caused by the deadly Coronavirus don’t want to be addressed as poor people that is why we can’t publish their names.

(Maryam Uwais, Special Adviser to the President on Social Investment on Channels TV Sunrise Daily 9th April, 2020) said:

“Those who benefit from the conditional cash transfer of the Federal Government as palliative to cushion the effects of the lockdown caused by the deadly Coronavirus don’t want to be addressed as poor people that is why we can’t publish their names. Also, the beneficiaries of the Federal Government’s gesture are invisible and dwell where the conventional society cannot see them and carrying journalists along to investigate the authenticity of the payments to the target persons will be cost implicative to the scheme because the funds at hand can’t pay for extra burden as we are only managing what we have”.

FANI KAYODE REACTS:

“If this woman really said this then she has to be one of the dumbest souls this side of paradise and she must assume that the Nigerian people are as dumb as she is.

“Her case proves more than any other that a pretty face does not necessarily translate into a knowledgeable head.

“I guess that I should not be surprised that she is as brainless as she is: after all she is nothing but a grovelling, slavish and empty-headed Buharideen.

“If Buhari asks them to eat his faeces and call it afang, ogbono or egusi soup they would do so without any hesitation. Filth can only give you filth.
